Palm Beach sailors go south for ACT/Southern Zone title
Hobie catamaran sailors from the Palm Beach Sailing Club ventured south to Vincentia to take on some of the best Hobie sailors in the World at the ACT and Southern Zone titles.
With entrants from as far away as Fiji and sailors including the current World champion from Vincentia the competition for the title was going to be tough. Vincentia lived up to this reputation with sailors on the water for 5 hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday with 8 long “back to back” races in moderate seas and winds up to 23 knots. Palm Beach sailors rose to the occasion though, taking out 7 of the top 10 “open” positions, winning the Youth and Grandmasters along with the perpetual trophy for most improved.
The current World Grandmaster champions, Kerli and Ali Corlett easily won the Grandmasters with Jason Waterhouse, the current Youth World Champion, sailing with cousin Lisa Darmannin winning the Youth Division. Anthony Duchatel and Lucas Price claimed 2nd in the Masters.
Veteran sailor and club stalwart, John McCormick sailing with Susan Graham took out the coveted perpetual trophy for most improved.
In the main event, the “Open” Division the competition was very tough. The extreme conditions in the last race not only decimated the fleet, with half retiring, but decided the outcome. It was the current World Champion and Vincentia local, Mick Butler sailing with Bruce McRae, who put it together in the last race to take the title from Andrew and Georgii McKenzie. Kerli and Ali Corlett came home in 3rd followed by other Palm Beach sailors Dave Fisher and Ainslie Gordon in 4th and Duchatel and Price in 5th.
